Question 1 of 5
1. Question
An abandoned bus, made famous by the 1996 book and 2007 film both called ‘Into the Wild’, has been airlifted from the place it was left in after years of hiker rescues and deaths.
The bus was abandoned near the boundary of Denali National Park and Preserve in Alaska, USA and has attracted travellers for years due to its fame established in the book and film. ‘Into the Wild’ tells the story of Christopher McCandless, a man who hiked across North America into the Alaskan wilderness in the early 1990s.
The bus had sat at its location since 1992, left there after the death of 24-year-old Virginian Christopher McCandless the subject of the book and film.
Hikers attracted to the site, situated about 25 miles (40km) west of the Parks Highway on the Stampede Trail, have visited over the years with varying levels of preparedness for enduring wilderness conditions and crossing the fast-running Teklanika River. This has resulted in several rescues and deaths over the years and some local officials have long called for its removal.
“It’s a little bittersweet, honestly,” said Denali Borough Mayor Clay Walker. “We know it’s the right thing to do for public safety, yet at the same time I watched it go down the Stampede Road, it does feel like a piece of your history moving on.”
The bus will, for now, remain in storage, and the state is considering options for its permanent placement elsewhere.
